Many modern materials, such as gypsum plasters and cement, significantly reduce the breathability of historic buildings. This can lead to trapped moisture within the fabric of the structure, often resulting in failing plasters and paint at ground level.
By removing these modern materials and reinstating them with lime plasters and renders, we can effectively remedy damp issues while also providing insulation. This creates a healthy, breathable environment for both the home and its occupants. With over 20 years of experience, we possess extensive knowledge in working with all types of lime plasters and mortars. We can also organise lime analysis if needed to match existing mortar.
We have considerable experience in restoring traditional timber frame buildings. Our primary approach is to be as sympathetic as possible to the original structure. When timbers need replacement, we use naturally air-dried timber to minimise unnecessary stress on the building as it naturally expands and contracts through the seasons.
Traditionally, infill panels within oak frames were constructed from wattle and daub—a breathable system that was lightweight and placed minimal strain on the frame. Unfortunately, these materials required maintenance; when they eventually failed, they were often replaced with bricks that imposed undue strain on these remarkable structures while trapping moisture.
Where possible, we aim to preserve or reinstate wattle and daub. However, depending on local conservation authority guidelines, we can also use various breathable natural alternatives that provide superior thermal properties compared to traditional materials. For example, hemp blocks allow us to follow the shape of the frame while being bedded in lime mortar and rendered with lime.
